NATIVE
AMERICAN INDIAN GREAT ZUNI BRACELET MARKED “ZUNI” “EMY” SOLD Mans bracelet. Blue
Turquoise and silver. One stone is cracked as seen in picture. Dramatic piece. Turquoise is most often found in arid, semiarid
or desert places such as the Southwestern U.S. A. Blue turquoise forms when there is copper
present which is the case with most Arizona turquoise. Green turquoise forms
where iron is present, the case with most Nevada turquoise. Matrix is the host
rock or the mother rock that can be made from several different
elements. Some turquoise such as
spider web turquoise is made up of small nuggets naturally cemented together
with rock or matrix, and when cut and polished, the
stone resembles a spider web. Turquoise has been used extensively by
Southwestern U.S. Native Americans.
Before 1880, the Native Americans had made solid turquoise beads,
carvings, and inlaid mosaics. The Native American Jewelry or “Indian style”
jewelry with turquoise mounted in or with silver is relatively new.
The Zuni, like other Pueblo peoples, are believed to be
the descendants of the Ancient Pueblo Peoples who lived in the desert
Southwest of New Mexico, Arizona, Southern Colorado and Utah for a thousand
years. Today the Zuñi or Ashiwi live in the Pueblo of Zuñi on the Zuñi River, a
tributary of the Little Colorado River, in western New Mexico. The Zuñi were and
are a peaceful, deeply traditional people who lived by irrigated agriculture
and now by the sale of traditional crafts. Their location is relatively
isolated, but they welcome tourists. Carved stone animal fetishes, jewelry,
needlepoint, and pottery are popular items. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that
